Shadows ~影色妖精絵本~ (Shadows ~Kage iro yousei ehon~) – english translation / Shadows ~影色妖精絵本~ (Shadows ~Kage iro yousei ehon~)

25 Août

Time to dance with the the mysterious book.

To see what is about this song click : here.

Notes:

The title of the song is really difficult. Actually, the way of habe been written the kanjis make me think that they are many interpretation/translation possible.

After the translation, I decided to choose “Shadowed, magical picture book”. My only problem is that the word “magical” that is the translation of “yousei = fairy”. In france, we have “féerie, féerique”, but in english these word becomes “enchanting, magical”, in the sens of a world full of fairy.

However, I’m letting the comment on my preview because it was pertinent for people who want to go deeper in the research.

« Ehon » refer to a book with many illustrated pictures for children. But this word is associated to the word « yousei » means « fairy ». So, the full expression « yousei ehon », refers to a children fairy tale, full of illustrations. After the word who give the most problem is « Kage ». Because Yura has put Shadows in English it will be logic to translate this world also by « Shadows ». But Yura has associated this word to « iro » means « colour ». The full exprssion « Kage iro » must be understand like a colour. But shadow is not really a colour, and that’s the problem when I translate. Of course the colour of shadow is nothing more than « black », to refer to everything that is « dark, malefic ». So, I have chosen “Shadowed”.

どんなマジナイでも何も得られないと
君は呟き 甘えるように拗ねる
ふと目にした絵本 とても古びていて
嘘のような呪文 右に左にと跳ねた
donna majinai demo nani mo erarenai to
kimi wa tsubuyaki amaeru you ni suneru
futo me ni shita ehon totemo furubite ite
uso no you na jumon migi ni hidari ni to haneta
No matter the charms, I never have something…
Until, you mutter to me: ‘Annoyed, to not be a spoiled child…’
Suddenly, my eyes noticed a very old picture book.
The incantations look like to lies… But even so, my right and left hand, jumped on it.

In red. The first paragraph was clearly difficult to translate.

In the first stanza « majinai » refer to Japenese charms to have luck in life. It can be also use to have protection against the « devil things », that it’s little funny because she will use « dark magic ».

The second stanza was the most difficult. Litterally, « kimi was tsubuyaki = you mutter » that it refer to the picture book, when it has called the girl for the first time. The rest of the stanza « amaeru you ni suneru » is the murmur of the book where this one propose to become a spoiled child. « Amaeru » and « haneta » has different sens possible, but Yura comment ‘s says it was about a poor child. So, I think it must be understand like this. That’s how I have interpreting the stanza.

In the last stanza, it seems that she didn’t believe on the incantation of the book, but because she have nothing to lose she try them.

Good and evil are the same, on the top of the scale,
Where are deflowering, the affections of my heart.
This small sorrow… This small pain…
Are decorated as flowers, for the refinement of someone.

In red. This paragraph is difficult to understand, even with a translation. I explain what I have understand. For me the pain and the sorrow of the girl are flowers/arguments, that she will use, to ask her wish to make true. In fact the two stanzas can be understand like this : “My pain and sorrow are the flowers/arguments to wish my refinement/better condition live”

Until, you mutter to me: ‘Annoyed, to not be a spoiled child…’

‘I’ll make your sweet dreams come true!’

‘Your wisdom doesn’t suit among others, for this ordinary world!’

These stanzas must be understand by the fact that is the book who is speaking to the girl. That makes me think that this one has a conscious. I know it’s strange but every time the word “kimi = you”is used in the song for me, it’s the book who is speaking.

When the book says ‘Your wisdom doesn’t suit among others, for this ordinary world!’, it makes me think that the girl succeed to recite perfectly an incantation (normal people can’t) and the book proposes to leave the ordinary world where she is living.

The wish of the girl :

It’s maybe the most interesting thing to study, actually there are some clues in the song. For me her wish was just to become a spoiled child with many fortunes and lusts.

In fact, she always asks and more to the book who fulfill her wish until she finishes to be eaten. Even so, the song is not sad for me, I can even think it’s a good end for the girl, because she is probably more happier in the fairy tale book.

Even so, the song is mysterious because we don’t at all what happen for her, after she was absorbed by the book. And according the title and other stanza in the song she will maybe suffer of atrocious things, who knows?
